Are Online PDF Converters Safe? What Happens to Your File

You've got a contract, a payslip or a passport scan, and you need it merged, split or turned into Word. The quick fix is an online converter. Before you drop the file in, it helps to know where it goes.

1. What an upload converter does with your file

Most online PDF converters work the same way. Your file goes to the provider's server, gets processed there, and stays for a set time before it's deleted. Here's what four well-known services say on their own pages (checked 20 October 2026).

Is iLovePDF safe?

iLovePDF describes itself as a "Europe-based company". Its security page says "all files processed within our platform are automatically and permanently deleted within two hours of being processed".

Is Smallpdf safe?

Smallpdf says "Our servers are located in Ireland" and, in Is Smallpdf safe?, "Files are permanently removed from our servers after one hour of processing".

Is PDF24 safe?

PDF24's privacy policy says "All files uploaded by the user and the results created are usually deleted one hour after uploading or creating the results. Longer storage may be required". PDF24 also offers an offline app, PDF24 Creator.

Is Adobe Acrobat online safe?

Adobe's Acrobat online FAQ says "Acrobat online services upload your files to Adobe cloud storage" and "If you don't sign in, even if you download the file, Adobe soon deletes it from its servers". It doesn't give a number of hours.

2. What to check before you upload

Read the provider's own policy, then ask four questions:

• How long is the file kept? Look for a deletion window in hours, not just "soon".
• Are there exceptions? Signing in, saving to an account or e-signing can keep files for longer than the free tools do.
• Where is it processed? Some services name a country. Many don't.
• Should this file go online at all? For ID, medical, legal or work documents, the safest upload is the one you don't make.

If the answer to the last one is no, process the file on your own device instead.

3. Convert in your browser, with no upload

4. The honest box: what the page does load

No upload doesn't mean no network at all. Here's everything else, in full:

• Google Analytics 4. It counts visits and sets two cookies, _ga and _ga_Z06Q388E09, which can last up to two years. There's no cookie banner.
• Google Fonts. When Word to PDF needs a font, it may ask Google Fonts for it by family name. The request names a font, never your document.
• The Word engine. It downloads from shinmuscat.com, never a third party.
• The TikTok tool is the one tool that uses our server. The TikTok tool only gets the link, and shinmuscat holds only your IP address, briefly and in memory, to limit requests; like any host, Vercel briefly logs request details such as your IP address.
• Tips. If you send a PayPal tip, PayPal shares your name and email with Gerald.

5. The rest of the toolkit works the same way
