Does shinmuscat Transcribe Audio or Read Captions?
shinmuscat reads a TikTok's own captions and does not listen to the audio. When that helps, when it fails, and when you need a speech-to-text tool instead.

The TikTok transcript generator FAQ spells out the trade-off: shinmuscat reads the video's existing captions rather than transcribing audio, so a video with captions turned off or missing will not return a script. Why that design exists
TikTok publishes a caption file on many public videos. Those auto captions are themselves transcribed automatically, and creators can edit the text once they are generated (TikTok newsroom: introducing auto captions). So a caption reader inherits TikTok's own transcription, mistakes and creator edits included. It does not add a second pass.
The script extractor FAQ is plain about scope: YouTube and Instagram links are not supported, and there is no plan to expand beyond TikTok. shinmuscat stays on TikTok and on the caption file, and the paste-a-link flow is free with no login and no daily limit.

When caption-read fails
If the public video has no caption track, shinmuscat has nothing to read and returns an error.

If the video is private or friends-only, there is no public page for an unauthenticated reader. That is a privacy wall, separate from missing captions: public vs private TikToks.

Use a speech-to-text tool when the video has real speech but no captions, or when you specifically need audio transcribed rather than TikTok's own track.
